The USS Arizona Memorial is part of the recently dedicated WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument.
Entrance is free, but it will cost you $7.50 to rent the audio guide. Also, parking is very limited and it fills fast; by 8:00am there were only two spaces available,The tour includes a movie explaining the reasons why Japan attacked, what was their strategy, and why it was successful.After the movie, you take a boat to the actual memorial site,the resting place for the USS Arizona.Overall it is a somber experience; while the movie gives you the facts of the events, it all comes together when you set foot at the memorial and the only thing above water is a service ladder and the remains of one of her gun turrets.Roberto Ramirez
Born in the midst of world war, USS MISSOURI (BB- 63), one of four completed Iowa-class battleships, and the fourth ship named for the "Show Me" state, was launched on January 29, 1944, and went on to participate in critical operations during the final months of World War II, including the Allied invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and the Allied advance on the Japanese home islands.
Following capitulation by Japan, the last of the Axis powers, USS MISSOURI was the site for the formal signing of the "Instrument of Surrender" on September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay by representatives of Japan and the Allied Nations — thus ending World War II.It is only when you are standing on her main deck, see the size of the gun turrets, and walk between her different sections that you realize that this ship belongs to an era long past.An era where GPS and missiles controlled by satellite navigation were decades into the future, it was nothing but the raw fire power of her nine 16"/50 caliber guns, three feet deep armored walls, and the sheer courage of her crew that allowed this battleship survive that chaotic hell.During our visit we encounter an interesting event: Two navy officers were raising and lowering several US flags on the main mast of the ship. The USS Bowfin is a fleet attack submarine that fought in the Pacific during WWII, and helped to make famous the term, “Silent Service.”
Bowfin was launched on 7 December 1942, exactly one year to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger, so it is fitting that she is permanently home-ported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.Kim and I have gone into two other submarines during our travel adventures; one in Philadelphia and the other in San Diego, both of them from the old Soviet Union era.One thing that we noticed during our visit to this ship is the quality of the construction of these vessel. By that I mean that the inside of this submarine was brighter, more spacious, and overall, the internal sections of the ship feel better organized.And, as I mentioned before, these characteristics directly points to the quality of the construction of these machines; also, what were the priorities during the design and construction of these steel tubes.Roberto Ramirez
