Chinese New Year - San Francisco (update 6)

February 24, 2013

Living in San Francisco is expensive.

Not only the living space is a premium over here but a parking space is as coveted as gold or the third wish from a genie,

We were walking to Japan Town (via Fillmore street) and we got a glance at some houses\apartments for sale and they want lots of money for what I believe to be a very small place.

Notice that none of the postings say the square footage...

Regardless, they all are a little bit outside our budget.

February 24, 2013

This is our last day in San Francisco, and it is another glorious day.

After having a some what expensive breakfast at Lori´s Dinner (Lori is the lesser know sister of Tiffany's) in comparison to yesterday´s Honey Honey, we went back to Chinatown to checkout the activities for this day.

There were less people than before but you still needed to wait a long time in line to get your free bag, or raffle ticket and the shops were in full swing.

The lion´s troops where executing some high pole maneuvering to bring up good luck for the new year.

This parade was insane!

Clocking at 3 hours long, it was just an incredible experience.

We got to our section one hour before the starting time (5pm) and we got the top row of the bleachers.

By 5pm we were surrounded by dozens of new friends and 30 minutes later we could see the parade coming our way.

More pictures to come.

The whole of Chinatown is pedestrian access only.

The main street is called Grant Avenue and it goes for at least 12 blocks, crossing streets for only a block both ways are also closed for regular traffic.

On all these street there are canopies, stands or a stage where different business are either raffling, giving away goodies (like bags or calendars) or just selling DVDs, garden ornaments, scarfs, plants or good luck charms.

We found this store while exploring Chinatown.

I has some figurines and vinyl dolls, but more than nothing, it has lots of clothing (t-shirts, sweaters and hoodies), phone covers, key chains and other nick-nacks.

They have everything from Hello Kitty, to Angry Birds, to Totoro, to Star Wars.

Day two of our adventures in San Francisco.

We are enjoying a very yummy breakfast at a nice restaurant called "Honey Honey Cafe and Crepery"

Today is the grand Parade in Chinatown, but is not going to happen until 5pm; so until then, we are going to explore the city and see in what kind of trouble we can get into.

Chinese New Year - San Francisco

February 22, 2013

Here we go again!

We are in the beautiful city of San Francisco attending the Chinese New Year celebrations to be held in... Chinatown of course.

We took a flight from Orange County and after just one hour and a half in the air we arrived to San Francisco. We took the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from the airport to the city and then a cable car about five blocks uphill to our hotel.

After we dropped our bags in the room we walked a couple of blocks to Chinatown to get our bearings and landmarks in order.

Now we are back in our room charging our batteries and reading about "Noodlemania - The 21 Best Bowls"; unfortunately, none of them are near by us.

Tomorrow, we might need to find our our place.

You might notice that the majority of the comic books I visited while in Toronto shared the same street address, Yonge Street.

Besides being the street of choice for all these comic stores, there are plenty of other interesting business that call this street home.

The 1000000 Comix store is located at 531 Yonge, Toronto, ON M4Y 1Y5.

This place is HUGE!. The Store goes from one side of the street to the other, across the entire block.

The place is organized in three distinct sections: The first section, when you enter the store, has one side of the wall covered with the latest comic book releases, while the other displays a large selection of statues and figurines nicely displayed inside IKEA cases.

The second section is the clothing department with jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats and and some board games.

The third and last section, all the way at the back of the store, contains the 1 million comics they advertise, and I do not doubt they have them.

They have about 6 large tables, each one has 24 rows of comics (two 12 rows of comics back-to-back) and underneath each table there are 60 boxes with handlers (two sets of 30 boxes back-to-back). And do not forget the bookcases and shelves covering the entire room.

While they have some comics and graphic novels related to Anime and Manga, their selection is quite vast. If you are looking to fill up some holes in your comic collection, might as well pay them a visit.
